Gifts in wills

Thank you for considering leaving a gift in your will.

The Friends of Penlee House is an independent charity formed in 1987 with the aim of supporting the activities and charitable objectives of Penlee House Gallery and Museum. With a membership of around 1,500 people, it is one of the largest museum friends’ groups outside of London. The organisation constantly strives to better itself and provide the necessary support to Penlee as it continues to grow and prosper. However, this requires financial support which is not always provided for by the income from the annual membership fees.

By leaving the Friends a gift in your Will you will enable us to help Penlee pursue new and exciting opportunities and to help secure it for future generations.

A message from our President, Kurt Jackson: “Penlee House is one of Cornwall’s pre-eminent picture galleries and works tirelessly to promote the art produced in this vibrant area over the last three hundred years. It is therefore essential that we strive to help and support Penlee however we can so that they can continue to keep, collect, and display works of art and artefacts for the public to enjoy.”.

How will we use your gift?

Below is a brief list of ways in which your gift could help the Friends support Penlee House Gallery & Museum:

• Contributions towards acquisitions. The museum is always looking to acquire new works to bolster its collection of pictures and artefacts to provide strong examples of the art produced in west Cornwall.

• Assistance with conservation costs. The museum’s extensive collection requires constant careand upkeep so that it is preserved for future generations.

• Help with educational outreach. The museum has a strong track-record of innovative education programmes that reach new audiences.

• Funding special projects. Every so often the Gallery undertakes major redevelopment projects in order to ensure its facilities are up to date and in line with what the museum visitor of today expects. These projects require substantial support.

What type of gift can you leave?

There are several types of gifts that you can leave us in your Will. Your solicitor will be able to talk you through the options, but here is an overview of the three main ways of giving:

  • A share of your estate. After any specific bequests, a percentage of your remaining or residual estate is given to a charity of your choice.
  • This is also called a Residuary Gift.A cash gift. A specific sum of money given to a charity of your choice. This is also called a Pecuniary GiftA special gift.
  • This type of gift often includes shares or another possession.

What are the next steps?

If you would like to make a gift to the Friends of Penlee House in your Will, then you should contact your solicitor and then get in touch with the Friends to let us know your intentions. We would like to thank you for your contribution and make sure that any questions you have are answered. If you have not yet written a Will then there are several options, including writing a will online using Farewill or by phone with a provider such as the Co-op. These providers have no affiliation with the Friends, and we would encourage our members to seek independent advice.
